Lea was born in 1986 to Edith and Marc Sarfati. Her mother was a nurse and her father was a delicatessen owner. She gre up in Tenafly, New Jersey as an only child.

She went to Tenafly High School and then went to a performing arts training center in the Catskills called Stagedoor Manor. From there she was accepted in to the CAP21 program at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She turned this down, having decided to continue to work on the stage.

In 1995 she debuted on Broadway as a replacement cast member in Les Miserables as Young Cosette. Shortly after this, she moved with her mother to Toronto where she performed in the original company of Ragtime, which went to Broadway in 1998.

In 2001 she auditioned for Spring Awakening, and in 2004 Lea played Shprintze and Chava in Fiddler Of The Roof. She was part of the original cast of Spring awakening, both on and off Broadway, playing Wendla from 2006 to 2008. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her performances in the categories of Outstanding Performance By A Lead Actress In A Musical and also a Drama Desk Award for Best Lead Actress. She left Spring Awakenings in May 2008, being replaced by a former understudy, Alexandra Socha.

In Augist 2008, she played Eponine in Les Miserables, as performed at the Hollywood Bowl concert and can be heard on the soundtracks of Ragtime, Spring Awakening and also Fiddler Of The Roof.

Lea won a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding ensemble performance and the 2009 Satellite Award for best actress. Lea has also received nominations for an Emmy Award, two nominations for Golden Globes and a Teen Choice Award for her role as Rachel Berry in Glee.

Lea is an active member of PETA and a number of gay rights groups. She is of Spanish and Italian descent, and owns two cats, Claude and Sheila, named after characters from the hit musical Hairspray.
